Chicon 8 may be over, but for many of our members, so many wonderful memories were made in five short days. And as the Chengdu committee reminded us during the closing ceremony, welcoming us in song to celebrate Worldcon 2023, we have a lot to look forward to as a community.

During the closing ceremonies, Chicon 8 staff members were recognized for their tremendous efforts, including David Kushner for 50 hours of volunteer work and Marinda Darnell, staff member of the year. We also learned that Tamora’s Legends sponsored 20 children and their families at the convention.

Chicon Party awards were as follows:

Best Food: Discon 3

Best Drink: Glasgow 24 (The Glasgow Gimlet)

Best Overall: The Royal Manticoran Navy

Hospitality/Community Choice: Seattle 2025

Remember, you can still view virtual panels and content through Airmeet with your Chicon 8 membership. The Hugo Award Ceremony is also available through YouTube, regardless of membership status.

Now, let’s take one final look at some of the memories made along the way, whether it be an unforgettable night at the Hugo Award Ceremony or one last stroll through Chicago.

Safe journeys, everyone, and may the enthusiasm of Worldcon be your guiding star in the days to come!

Fan from 2012 Found!

A team of Star Chart roving reporters, following up on rumors from hotel staff, located a long-lost fan from Chicon 7. Keith Pavane from Chelm, Ohio had been wandering the tunnels underneath the Hyatt since the 2012 convention in search of the elusive Stagg Field room. When told the whole thing was a joke, Pavane ran off to continue his quest, yelling: “It was in print, so it has to be true!”

The Fabulous Riverwalk Transformation!

For a brief period yesterday morning, the Chicago Riverwalk turned into the Chicago Riverworld as the Fabulous Riverboat (with Mark Twain at its helm) and cruised past the Hyatt Regency hotel to wave at their spiritual successors. On board were Isaac Asimov, Andre Norton, Robert Heinlein, William Tenn, Alice Sheldon, and others. When people on the riverbank asked where they came from, Frederik Pohl said they escaped from the American Writers Museum here in Chicago.

PSA: Mechanical Hound Coffee Safe for Consumption

Despite reports to the contrary, the Mechanical Hound coffee served by the Ray Bradbury Center Table did not cause members of Worldcon 2022 to grow eight legs with rubber padded paws. Please do not panic. We are not yet living in a dystopian future that bans and destroys books for arbitrary reasons… oh, wait.

Site Selection Update: Worldcon 2024 to take place in Moominvalley

Due to a mix-up in the voting process, it was later revealed that the actual site of Worldcon 2024 will be Moominvalley, a lovely place by all accounts (with the rare exception of falling comets).

Hill Books Takes a Year Off From Hugos

At the Chicon 8 Hugo Awards Ceremony, Mr. Howard Hill (the publisher of the eponymous Hill Books) announced that due to Hill’s dominance of the novella category, they would not take part in next year’s Hugo’s competition: “There’s a tradition in the Hugos that when an author or a publication has become too dominant in a category that they take a year off to give other people a chance.”

Hill and its hilldotcom publishing wing has not only owned the novella category, with all six of this year’s finalists. It had four of six finalists for novel and four out of six finalists for best series. “Fans have grown so used to nominating Hill Books for everything,” continued Mr. Hill, “that we even got some nominations for Best Dramatic Presentation… and we don’t even make films! That’s when we knew it was time to take a breather.”

Hill Books will be back for the 2024 Hugo Award.

After Hugos Party in Virtual!

The Virtual Crew hosted a Poll Party in Airmeet after the Hugos. Silly polls abounded and much jollity was had. Do we sense a new Worldcon tradition in the making? The virtual party continued with a poll-based composition of Limericks. Here is an example:

There once was an online convention
with uncountable silly intentions
But airmeet went splatz
overwhelmed by the cats
that unplugged the power extension

And after all that silliness, the crew embarked to the lounge for a series of Jackbox Games. Great fun was had by all.

This hoax post was brought to you by Sam Lubell, Rex Allen Hughes, Eddie Louise, and the mysterious ballot caster for Moominvalley (one report is actually true – can you guess which one?).

Every journey comes to an end, and in the words of the fabulous Carol Burnett, I’m so glad we had this time together. The Worldcon community has proven itself to be a community of resilience, a community of enthusiasm, and a community to be cherished by every fan of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of such a community, and it has been wonderful to collaborate with our publications team and roving reporters along the way.

On our journey through the stars of fandom, our team always wanted the Chicon 8 newsletter to be about stories – not just the stories we read or watch or play, but the stories taking place all around the convention. Now, this story has come to its final chapter, ending this afternoon with the closing ceremonies. However, another story continues onward. Even as we travel to different corners of the globe and switch off our computers, we are still living the human story, taking place in this little corner of the cosmos.

When presented with this image of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe, a “mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” astronomer Carl Sagan had the following to say about our planet, this place where we live out the stories of our existence:

“It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” (Full video and speech embedded below)

We may look to the stars in our fiction and dream of sailing beyond the sunset, but from a certain point of view, it becomes clear that we are already a part of the universal story. We truly hope that Chicon 8, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention, has inspired you to experience this story to its fullest.

Safe voyages, my friends, and may we meet again soon.

Do you have some time to spare and want to fill it? Stop by Program Ops in Columbian and offer to help be a Gopher. Grab a blank volunteer slip from the desk downstairs from Columbian to record your hours and get some free stuff!

If you have some time on Tuesday, September 6th, we could use some help unloading the art show grid into a couple of different storage units in different parts of town. Please email logistics@chicon.org if you can lend a hand, likely from about 9 am – 4 pm.

Trust us, you’ll want to stick around for our final day of content. For now, let’s celebrate the time we have left with an article from Sam Lubell, contributor and last year’s editor, followed by snapshots of Worldcon 2022 shared by our members.

Celebrating Speculative Fiction All Year Round

Worldcon is just 5 days a year. What about the remaining 360? There are some ways you can keep the fun of Worldcon alive, all year round.

Of course, Worldcon is one of the most important conventions, but there are lots of other cons, as well. Your local area probably has at least one (or more) conventions. Take a look at the flyer racks in the exhibit space for conventions divided on the shelves geographically. And, of course, you can find them on the internet (Locus Magazine Convention page).

Your local area probably already has a local science fiction club. Check around large cities and college campuses. If one doesn’t exist, you can start one! Many clubs start by meeting in libraries or people’s homes.

There are also national science fiction and fantasy organizations, too. The National Fantasy Fan Federation has monthly publications and an online convention.

Your favorite authors probably have an online presence on Twitter, Facebook, and email newsletters. They would love it if you subscribed.

There are many online magazines, fanzines, and webzines online, many of which have comment sections. Check the list of Hugo nominations for a good place to start.

See you online or at a future Worldcon!
